To me deciding the title like this detracts from the victory, it tarnishes it to me because nobody actually won the game...How can you say we won when you did not???

Maybe that is why AMericans are different...We actually want a team to win to see who is better....

Same thing in Hockey, Olympics and World championships...Let's ahve a shootout to see who wins... Play until there is a winner...Why have a tournament if you can't decide a winner...

I still love soccer but it is a joke how they decide a winner in a major tournament...It seems the rest of the world has no problem with deciding a game like this...Only AMericans have a problem with deciding a game like this...

Wrong you are Hawk. If the Super 'Dud' goes to extra time, they play a sudden-death 15 minute quarter, meaning whichever team scores first, the Super 'Dud' is crowned. Same difference. (How would you like to see the Bowl end on a safety?)

As for the rest of you, why wasn't this thread posted prior to the game or even prior to the beginnning of the extra time sessions. Something tells me quite a few were on les Francais today. Don't trash the whole game just because of the penalty shootout. Trash it because the referees are granting penalties to the guys who dive and cry.

The penalty shoot-out isn't any different than a hockey shoot-out but I don't see people trashing hockey because of it. If you don't have a shoot-out these low-scoring matches could go on for over an hour. They are already too long.

Nope. Didn't have money on it and I hate the French, just watching a "shoot out" decide a game like that is rediculous. It makes you feel like you wasted your time watching the game to begin with.

Want to watch two guys kick FG's to decide an NFL game???

You guys are missing the point. EVERYONE agrees PKs suck, Italians, French, Germans, Brazilians (all of whom have benefitted from PK victories in major tourneys that they eventually won). I haven't heard anyone ever say they are a good thing and you always hear commentators, players, coaches lamenting that a game has to end that way, especially big games. HOWEVER, those are the rules of the game. It isn't inherently unfair to either team. It is simply a shitty way to end a game.

Personally, I think they should play until they drop, give each team another sub at the start of each 15 minute period and perhaps allow players to re-enter the game after regulation ends. That would be a MUCH better way to end a game, but these are the cards we are dealt. Frankly, it is more inherently fair than the way the NFL ends games. Which, although in theory the team losing the coin toss has a shot, in practice they rarely do.

To say teams shouldn't celebrate is intellectually dishonest. The ultimate goal is to advance and these teams advance fairly under the rules of the game. I hate PKs, but until I am head of FIFA, we have to live with them.

Penalty Kicks are stupid. They spend all this time playing this tournament, they can wait till someone scores another goal. In American Sports nothing like this has ever happen. In the NBA Finals after the 1st Overtime they don't go to Free Throw shooting. In the NHL they don't have shoot outs in the playoffs. They wait till someone scores a goal. The Superbowl is only time something like this could happen with OT and the coinflip but it has never happen so we can't complain about it yet.
